Conversations with a 2 year old.

07 Jul

Last night, my husband, my youngest son, and I all crawled into bed together. We usually spend some time snuggling with him or letting him watch TV in our bed to settle down, then move him to his when he is good and asleep. It’s our way of compromising between our needs and his needs. It works pretty well, especially now that he seems to be sleeping through *most* nights. We still get the occasional wee hours visitor but by that point we’re both asleep enough that we don’t care.

Last night, my husband fell asleep first and this conversation ensued:

Little Boy: Da-yee? Da-yee? (Translation: Daddy? Daddy?)
Me: Shhhhhhh, baby.
LB: Da-yee? Wake? (Daddy, are you awake?)
Me: Shhhhhh. Daddy’s asleep. He has to get up early tomorrow.
LB: Wuhk? (Does he have to work?)
Me: Yes, he has to work. Now let’s all be quiet and go to sleep.

He’s not actually working but he was given the opportunity to receive some free training and is taking advantage of that. But I was blown away by how much a *2 year old* seems to understand. And remember, he just turned 2 at the end of June. He’s starting to pick up several words on a daily basis and use them regularly. As trying as this age is, it’s also a time of huge developmental strides that are a LOT of fun to watch. Sure, we get the tantrums when he can’t express his wants/needs in a way that we understand, but most of the time it’s just a pure joy to watch him learn and grow. This is what I LOVE about being a mom.

I’m right there with you. I love every moment with my 2-year-old, watching him as he absorbs the world around him. Being a mom is a more amazing journey than I could ever have imagined.
