First ER visit on the eve of his 2nd birthday.

I got to experience Central Carolina’s ER for the first time tonight. We were in and out in about 2 hours, so not too terrible, considering I’ve been lucky enough to wait for 9+ in an ER with a kidney stone before every even seeing a doctor or being offered pain relief. (Seriously…Cape Fear Valley in Fayetteville is the *worst* hospital I’ve been to for pretty much anything.) My youngest fell and cut his head on the window sill on the way out of Fairview Dairy Bar tonight. We came straight home and called our pediatrician’s nurse triage line to find out if it was ER worthy. We were told the pediatrician on call would get in touch with us within about 20 minutes and let us know. As usual, nothing worked like they said it would and I finally called them back after an hour. The official word was that we should head to the ER. It was 9PM by this time, so we loaded everyone into the minivan and went over there. Waited for a while, but the treatment was uncomplicated and we were out by 11PM. So not too terribly bad over all.

And tomorrow morning, at 8:49AM, he will officially be 2 years old. I just can’t believe how fast my baby is growing up.

Well, I’m glad you had a good experience. Last time I was there, I threw my flashers on and aided my struggling-to-breathe-having-an-allergic-reaction husband into the CCH ER to … well … no one.
Sure, there were people sitting in the waiting area, but no hospital staff anywhere in sight. I had to barge into the triage area and grab a nurse. Totally scary.
Then people wonder why we went up to Cary to have the baby. *rolling eyes*
Glad he’s ok, and happy birthday wishes!

I’m glad you had a good experience also and that he is okay! And wish him a happy, happy birthday!!

Along with Emily, we do not have good CCH ER experiences. It all started with my dad over 20 years ago, but that is a long story. Since then, we have always used the Moore Regional ER. In May of last year when I broke my ankle, I was in so much pain and it was swollen so bad that Jonathan (trying to be the wonderful husband he is) was afraid to drive the extra 15 minutes to Pinehurst and hesitantly took me to our ER. We walked through the door about 5 minutes before another woman with a very similar injury, who happened to be a friend of the lady at the front desk. She was given something to elevate her foot, an ice pack, and was taken back rather quickly. I was given….nothing!! Jonathan went balistic! Anyway, long story short, we were there from 7:30 p.m. until 1 a.m. They mixed my x-rays up with the other lady’s and could not tell us which one had a broken ankle and which one just a sprain. The ER doc’s solution was that it didn’t matter anyway because I was too swollen to cast that night!! It was crazy!!

I am so glad you had a positive experience at our Emergency Room. We have been making huge changes there to make sure people are seen in a timely manner. We’ve been working on changes since last year, but this month was our biggest change as we welcomed several new physicians into our hospital who have a track record of reducing the patient’s time from check in to discharge. We always welcome feedback, so if you ever have any concerns, we want to know about it! Happy Two to your baby! Sincerely, Margaret

I’ve been pleased with all of our medical care experiences at CCH, actually. The birth of our youngest son, my *many* trips into outpatient surgery for kidney stones, labwork, x-rays, etc. have all been handled quickly and I’ve felt like we were well cared for.

I have not been thrilled with the billing/payment options, however. And trust me, if I had the money, I’d pay my bills in full tomorrow if only to stop avoiding the daily phone calls. I was told we had to pay a minimum of 10%/month towards the bills and I’ve NEVER had to do this with any other hospital. Usually they’re thrilled to get even $25 a month…not CCH! And of course now we can’t spare even an extra dime every month. So I will continue to avoid the phone calls and hope that someday soon I can resume the payments that I could barely afford before my husband lost his job.

I’d like to suggest you contact our Director of Patient Services, Sue Gaines, sometime next week about your billing concerns. Her number is (919) 708-4629. She may have some options available to help you. Please tell her I sent you. Sincerely, Margaret
