Can someone please define “immoral conduct” for me?

I don’t know why it’s bothering me so much, but I’d love to know what the alleged “immoral conduct” is that the Lee County School Superintendent apparently just resigned over. (Check www.sanfordherald.com for updates.) Certainly there are crazy things running through my head, but I feel like it’s unfair to assume anything that I’m thinking is likely considering he is not in jail. But it does give me pause, knowing my child is about to start attending a Lee County school.

I know that there are many definitions of “immoral conduct” and though I would disagree that most of them are worth firing someone for or resigning over when caught, it seems like it must have been pretty serious stuff.

A weekend away, and some time without children.

Thursday morning we loaded up the minivan and hit the road for a mini-cation. It had been planned shortly before the job loss happened and we were unable to get our money back on the hotel. So we decided that it was better to take the trip and enjoy ourselves for a few days rather than lose the $300 we’d already paid. We headed to Gatlinburg, the incredibly trashy mountain tourist destination. (Myrtle Beach is the incredibly trashy beach tourist destination.) I do so enjoy embracing my trashy side once in a while…

Anyway, we spent basically the entire day taking our time in getting there. We drove through Cherokee and resisted stopping at the casino to take our shot at the jackpot. It was a really enjoyable drive. I loved that the street signs in Cherokee had the road names translated into the native language. I’d been there before but either didn’t notice it then or this is a relatively new feature. We talked to the boys about Sequoyah and other Cherokee history. Not sure how much they really listened, but I felt like it was good stuff to talk about while we had them held captive in their car seats.

We finally arrived at our hotel (Glenstone Lodge…great place to stay!) around dinner time and after unloading, we walked down to the “strip” and explored for a while. Had dinner at a nice little sandwich place and returned to the hotel. On Friday morning, we got up and headed to the hotel where my in-laws were waiting to spend the day with us. They had (of course!) many treats to spoil the boys with.

We walked around the area and my FIL insisted on lunch at Bennett’s, which is just OK. Typical chain restaurant food, IMO. Plus it’s got the whole “Tennessee BBQ” thing going on and we know how I feel about that. He also really wanted to eat dinner at Texas Roadhouse, which I just could not get behind. As much as I think Gatlinburg is a trashy tourist destination, there are some *really* good local places to eat and I hated the idea of eating somewhere that I could eat at here (well, surrounding area) anytime I wanted. So we went to Flying Horse Grill down in Pigeon Forge and it was really good…though that opinion was not shared by everyone in our party. I think the lone dissenter was just a case of sour grapes, though. ;)

Saturday morning we got up and took the kids to stay with my mom in Knoxville. On the way back, we did some shopping because my maternity clothing situation was getting desperate. (Actually, it still is…if you know of anyone with maternity clothes they no longer need, I would LOVE to have them. I’m what’s euphemistically known as a “special size” so it’s hard to find things second-hand that fit. If you think you may be able to help out, please leave me a comment or shoot me an email. I’m happy to return anything you want back once I’m done!) I managed to get a couple of things that were marked way down, so that was helpful. We then returned to our hotel to rest a bit before our big dinner out sans children. We ate at Calhoun’s and had a delicious meal courtesy of the gift card my brother and his wife had given us at Christmas.

Sunday morning we headed back to Knoxville to pick up the kids and have a small family lunch/b-day party for my youngest. We got back on the road around 4:00 and finally made it home around 11PM last night. It took so long because we took a very long detour in Hickory to find a Backyard Burgers because I’ve had *major* cravings. I adore my husband because he was very patient through the entire ordeal…though I could tell he thought it was a wild goose chase. Still, we eventually found it and I indulged in a lemon chicken sandwich and some chili cheese fries. Just what this pregnant girl needed!

First ER visit on the eve of his 2nd birthday.

I got to experience Central Carolina’s ER for the first time tonight. We were in and out in about 2 hours, so not too terrible, considering I’ve been lucky enough to wait for 9+ in an ER with a kidney stone before every even seeing a doctor or being offered pain relief. (Seriously…Cape Fear Valley in Fayetteville is the *worst* hospital I’ve been to for pretty much anything.) My youngest fell and cut his head on the window sill on the way out of Fairview Dairy Bar tonight. We came straight home and called our pediatrician’s nurse triage line to find out if it was ER worthy. We were told the pediatrician on call would get in touch with us within about 20 minutes and let us know. As usual, nothing worked like they said it would and I finally called them back after an hour. The official word was that we should head to the ER. It was 9PM by this time, so we loaded everyone into the minivan and went over there. Waited for a while, but the treatment was uncomplicated and we were out by 11PM. So not too terribly bad over all.

And tomorrow morning, at 8:49AM, he will officially be 2 years old. I just can’t believe how fast my baby is growing up.

Apparently the crazy is unfounded!

Everything was great today and we were even able to hear the baby’s heartbeat via Doppler. It’s very early for this, so great news! I am scheduled for a nuchal translucency screen on July 7, and we’ll get to see the baby via ultrasound again then. Hopefully I’ll get a picture worth sharing then!

Lacking Motivation

I have an OB appt at 1:00 and I haven’t even been in the shower yet. I’m just not in the mood to do it today, for some reason. I think I’m scared about getting bad news. I have had some minor problems this week but I went in on Monday and they said everything seemed OK, but that doesn’t make it easier. I guess I feel like I’m waiting for the other shoe to drop and I can’t shake the feeling that there’s more bad news on the horizon for us.

So if you can, spare a prayer or good thought for us this afternoon. Hopefully all goes well and I find out I’m a little crazy. Won’t be a huge surprise! I think pregnancy brings out the crazy in all of us, especially if you have a poor history…

Need a web site?

I’m going to throw this out there to the world in general in the hopes that it reaches someone who needs some help! As I’ve mentioned, I set up the website for my husband’s new business. I’m not linking it here right now because I want to get permission from him first, but I plan to add a Portfolio page in the next day or 2 with a link to it. (Watch for it at the top of the page, across from the bird graphic.)

I’m also working on a couple of other web projects, all utilizing WordPress and other free resources. This makes set up simple and fast (assuming I get quick responses from the client when providing information to them) and it makes updating information easy even for someone with little to no web knowledge. By utilizing the free tools that are already out there, I realize I’m not doing anything earth shattering. BUT, I also know that not everyone has the time or the skills to put something like that together. For now I’m doing this pretty cheaply so I can get some portfolio sites and because we could really use the extra cash.

If you want more details, email me via the contact form or leave a comment here with a way for me to get in touch with you. I’ll probably also post more information on the Portfolio page when I get it up there, hopefully tomorrow!

Edit to add that the Portfolio page is up. As of now there’s only one link but I hope to have a couple more in the next few weeks!

Seven Dirty Words

I was so sad first thing this morning when I saw the news that George Carlin had died. I think he was hilarious, even when I disagreed with what he had to say. I usually found myself watching him and laughing out loud…but being sure I was going to go to hell for being so amused. I was watching a video earlier on YouTube where he says his job is “thinking up goofy s**t.” What a fun job to have, and what a great job he did.

If you’re wanting to watch some funny stuff and bad language doesn’t offend you, check out this YouTube playlist. It’s old stuff (1978) but still funny and relevant. There is some discussion of the Seven Dirty Words, though it’s not the original bit. Still, it was a good laugh and I have a feeling George would be glad to know we’re still laughing.

Oh, and if you don’t know what the original Seven Dirty Words are, wikipedia has all the info you need. Again, if bad language offends you, don’t click.

Yes, they both have the same father.

I have two children who are opposites on the spectrum when it comes to coloring. My oldest son is very dark in skin, hair, and eyes. My youngest is very fair in all of those areas. So often when we are out and about, people do a double take and blurt out things like “Where did that blond hair come from?” or “Wow, are they both yours?” or even “Gosh, their daddies must have had very different coloring.”

I have very similar coloring to my oldest son, so I can see why people think it’s a little strange for my youngest to be so fair. But honestly my husband doesn’t have very dark hair and he has blue eyes, so it’s not a huge surprise. Plus we were both blond as children. Not really towheaded white blond like my toddler is, but still we both had light hair and it darkened as we grew. It’s quite common, actually! Add to that the fact that my mom has light colored eyes, and clearly we just have a kid with mostly dominant gene expression and one with mostly recessive gene expression. Unusual, but certainly not impossible or even improbable!

So I’m always a little taken aback when people think that they must have different fathers. And I’m not quite sure what that says about *me* as a person. They are nearly 4 years apart so I don’t suppose it’s completely out of the realm of possibility that I might have had more than 1 relationship in that period of time, but when you’ve been with the same person since you were 17 (yes, I was jail bait when we first met!) it seems a little presumptuous when people ASSume I’m a man jumper or something. It really couldn’t be farther from the truth, and I’m very proud of the fact that we have been together for such a long time, especially considering our ages when we met and the things we’ve gone through together. Not a lot of people my age can say the same. Not that it’s bad if you can’t, of course!

But all of this does make me wonder what type of gene expression this one will have. Will this one be a redhead with green eyes? There are some redheads in the extended family, so it’s possible. I think more than likely he (or she?) will probably be a perfect blend of us, just like our other 2 children.

Or there’s always the theory that my oldest is a bit darker because he came out of the oven late (a week overdue) and my youngest is lighter because we took him out a bit early (2 weeks) so maybe it all depends on how long I carry this one. I was considering not finding out the sex this time but my husband won’t go for it (he says the surprise was in the beginning!) so perhaps our big surprise at the end will be in the complexion. We’ve now had one born with brown eyes (seriously, brown from the womb) and one born with blue eyes that stayed blue, so I guess anything can happen!

A beautiful evening, right here in Sanford for FREE!

Last night was the concert I’ve been looking forward to most. Kenny Huffman plays music I love and interspersed with the great stuff that everyone knows are a few of his originals which are really good as well. (They are available free for download on his website, by the way!) The weather was gorgeous, it was warm but not hot, the bugs didn’t bother us, and it was a beautiful night to be outside and listening to some music. I seriously wish they had this guy *every* week. Not that I don’t like the other musical styles, but this is by far my favorite. And apparently I’m not the only one…Depot Park was packed last night! There were lots of other kids for the boys to play with, which is always nice. It was just a great night and we all had a lot of fun.

What I want more than anything…

I’d love to go get a pedicure. It is a guilty pleasure of mine, and something I really enjoy doing. Of course, even small indulgences are out for us right now. It would just be awesome to head over and pick out some “I’m Not Really a Waitress” red (yes, it’s a real color!) and have a little foot pampering. I hate my feet but I live in flip flops and sandals all summer long so I do try to spruce them up just a little. It’s the little things…

Like bread. I have a type of bread that I really like. It’s a bit more expensive, but the slices are bigger. Still, we run out WAY too fast with all 4 of us eating sandwiches at lunch so I’m going to have to compromise. I’m going to check the “day old bread” store but regardless of what I find there, I’ll probably be eating mostly WhiteWheat or Bunny bread or some such garbage because I’ll feel guilty otherwise. Actually, I may start making bread again. I wish I had a breadmaker because it makes it so much easier, but it’s really therapeutic to do it the old fashioned way, too. Maybe I just need to pull out my old bread recipes and take the plunge. It’s healthier because I control the content of stuff like sugar, and no matter how fancy you get it’s hard to spend as much on ingredients as you would on a loaf of really good bread.

  • I am a mom to 3 living in Sanford, NC. I am a wife. I am a student. I am a Christ follower. I am a friend. This is the craziness of my life.
